The Top 3 Finalists

The ladies with the highest scores in the “Final Question” segment will participate in the “Final Look” part. It is simply just walking down the Miss Universe 2016 stage and (I think) being judged on how confident the candidate is! Finding that delegate who embodies the “Confidently Beautiful” slogan is the main objective of this section.

So, who do you think will constitute this year’s Top 12 semifinalists?!?

Maxine Medina’s “Q&A Problem”

Maxine Medina is in for a once-in-a-lifetime experience as she represents the  Philippines in Miss Universe 2016. Representing a country that is now considered as a “Beauty Pageant Powerhouse” surely comes with a certain level of pressure. However, Maxine is a no ordinary Miss Universe candidate.

Credits for Photos Below: Maxine’s FB Account

She is being compared to 6 exemplary Filipina queens who, year after year, placed as a semifinalist/finalist in the biggest and most prestigious international beauty pageant. She is being compared to the most recent Filipina queen who, with sheer hard work, brought home the Miss Universe crown. She is being scrutinized as if she is under a microscope – from the way she speaks her thoughts to how she moves. She needs to impress not only the Miss Universe judges and the Miss Universe Organization but also the entire Filipino nation, as the pageant is staged right in front of our very eyes! That is too much pressure if you’ll ask me and if this is not a genuine test of one’s character, I don’t know what is. And if this will not convince you of Maxine’s strength, I am sure that nothing will ever be.

I have been asked countless times on my opinion about Maxine’s ability to express herself using English. Filipino “netizens” were quick to crucify Maxine when her sentence construction was not on point during the Q&A portion of her send off. I was not surprised on how these “netizens” reacted as I have seen and heard the same reaction in the past. Let this be my reply to the Filipino fans who continue to bash Maxine because of her communication skills

  • This is a Beauty Pageant! Everyone should remember that. Beauty encompasses a lot of things – physical beauty (face and physique), inner beauty (strength of character, attitude and confidence) and brains (comprehension and ability to think on her feet). There is more to Miss Universe than just Q&A.
  • The format of the competition encourages the ladies to excel in everything. Ladies need to have a healthy physique and confidence on stage to excel in the swimsuit round. Elegance and grace is required in the evening gown round. Ability to comprehend and sincerity are two things that judges will look for during the Final Question. Do not fret, you need to pass the swimsuit and evening gown hurdle first before getting a chance to answer that final question.
  • The Question & Answer portion is an important part of the competition but judges are not focusing on the candidate’s sentence construction. They will look for sincerity, ability to organize her thoughts (despite the time constraint) and how she is informed on issues that affect the world. Maxine doesn’t need a perfect English sentence construction to win the Final Round because if it is really the basis then Shamcey Supsup (Philippines, Miss Universe 2011) and Kaci Fennell (Jamaica, Miss Universe 2014) should have placed higher.
  • Maxine is not perfect but I am 100% sure that she prepared for this as if her life depends on it.
  • Maxine is a product of Aces & Queens and this is the camp that gave us Pia Wurtzbach, Megan Young and Kylie Verzosa. I am sure that A&Q was with Maxine every step of the way, ensuring that she prepares well for this battle. Ara Arida and Venus Raj received the same reaction because of their communication skills but they ended up with titles. So again, do not fret!
  • Lastly, I’d love to see Maxine win the 4th Miss Universe crown BUT any placement for me is already an achievement.

If you continue to bash Maxine after this, I challenge you to join Binibining Pilipinas 2017 and show us how things should be done!

To Maxine, enjoy the remaining days of the competition. Relax, majority of Filipino pageant fans are behind you on this. You are already making us proud! Mabuhay ka Maxine!!!

Binibining Pilipinas 2017 (2nd Update): Binibini Wish List – Part 1

bbp2017

While all of us are in beauty pageant heaven because of Miss Universe 2016 being staged in the Philippines, I set my sight on to Binibining Pilipinas 2017 as BPCI opens its screening for interested Filipinas. I can’t wait to meet the ladies who will officially become Binibini-aspirants and will have a fair chance to win one of the coveted titles in the country.

I can’t wait to see the Shamcey Supsup of this year – that fresh-faced lady who was courageous enough to join a national pageant despite the fact that she doesn’t have any pageant experience, but will end up winning the top plum simply because of her beauty, confidence, attitude and determination. Also, I am looking forward to see the Pia Wurtzbach of this year – that familiar face who was once a Binibini aspirant, did not get the crown but is determined to give her dream another chance.

Taking a queue from Pia, I would love to see the following ladies in action this year and give Binibini another chance.

Mariel De Leon

angelicabb

Mariel is an alumna of Binibining Pilipinas 2013. It is one of the most competitive and most successful Binibini batches so I can only expect the best coming from Mariel. She was one of the most bashed candidate on that year because of her body being considered as “not pageant ready” and fans getting nervous of her getting a special treatment because of her celebrity dad. She ended up as a semifinalist and ended her Binibini stint gracefully.

After a short hiatus, Mariel was on track to prove her bashers wrong. She transformed into an elegant queen. Those bashers turned into fans and they themselves are now screaming for Mariel to make a Binibini come back. It is not helping that Mariel is a staple in every Aces & Queens coverage and was seen with the A&Q Miss World Philippines 2016 candidates. What a story!!! I can’t wait to see Mariel in action.

Emma Mary Tiglao

Kagandahang Flores fielded this Kapampangan beauty in Binibining Pilipinas 2014. It was a year full of fan favorites, with MJ LastimosaKris Janson and Pia Wurtzbach leading the pack. She had to start from the bottom as she was establishing her name with the pageant fans. Emma had one of the best performance that year and peaked just in time for the coronation. Though not a front runner, every major blog and beauty pageant site included her as a favorite.

Emma ended up as a semifinalist and fans were quick to point out that she needed to work on her Q&A performance. She joined Miss World Philippines 2015 but came up short, only placing as 4th runner-up. For me, Emma should take it as a sign that she is destined to be in Araneta and I hope that her 1 year hiatus prepared her for this herculean task.

Charmaine Elima

Now, here is someone very interesting! Maine was fielded by the Kagandahang Flores camp to join the 50th Binibining Pilipinas edition in 2013 – again, one of the most competitive Binibinin batches. She was one of the early favorites, one of KF’s best bet and one of my favorites. The night ended with Maine reaching only the Top 15. Some would say that it was her styling, her lackluster performance on the night itself and some even said that she was just overshadowed by other candidates. I would say a little mixture of all three.

Maine went on to become a flight attendant. She traveled because of work and I can only hope that her experience taught her valuable lessons and molded her into a mature and confident lady. I am sure that if she is due for a Binibini come back, we will see a whole different Maine!

So what is interesting with Maine’s come back (of course other than the fact that she is rumored to be coming back)?!? I’ve been hearing consistently that if Maine will give Binibini another try, she will be joining the Aces & Queens camp! Now, that is interesting!

Arnold Vegafria is the New Miss World Philippines National Director!

arnold01

Photo Credits: IG of Arnold Vegafria

Ola!

I must admit that this was a huge shocker for me. The news that Cory Quirino relinquished the National Director of Miss World Philippines, caught me off guard. I was under the impression that Ms. Cory was very happy with her performance in Miss World via the “uninterrupted” semifinal placement of her ward since 2011.

arnold02

On the other hand, I can’t wait to see what Arnold Vegafria will bring into the table. MWP needs to ensure that Miss World Philippines 2017 will be hyped properly to attract the needed aspirants.

What could be the reason for Cory’s decision to give up her franchise?

I am very anxious to know.
